One standard that pulled my attention was HE.5.PHC.2.3 which explains how new technology and how it is used can impact peoples individual thoughts, emotions, and health related actions and choices. One of the clarifications to this standard is emphasizing and not overlooking the fact that technology leads to cyberbullying and the negative impacts associated with that, along with how screens are becoming addicting and can lead to mental health struggles. I do feel preparent to implement this standard because of the fact that I grew up with technology in my classrooms and have been able to see first hand some of the impacts on various people and in different situations. It is imperative to not glamorize technology to the point where its downfalls are overlooked because some of the effects could cause more harm than good.
I decided to look into second grade social studies and further examine the topic of examining primary and secondary sources. The resources under this example could be extremely helpful, especially for a new teacher or someone whos first time it is teaching this age group and subject. As a teacher, you will not always know what the best way to teach something is, or what is resonate and stick best with the students. Having these resources, such as lesson plans and sources on the website make it much easier for the teacher because it could be difficult to put into words how to explain this concept or to explain it in a way which makes it easiest for students to understand. Along with that, it makes the teachers life much easier because they do not need to comb through numerous sources to find ones appropriate for the grade level, rather, they can go on this website and find what has already been picked out.
As a teacher, it should be evident how much information, including false information, is on the internet. It should be important for teachers to be able to efficiently and effectively search the internet for relevant information. If one is not proficient with this, it can take lots of time having to read numerous websites in order to find exactly what you are looking for. Out of the skills introduced this week, I think the CPALMS website will be most useful because it is a one stop shop for any grade level, subject, and lesson. As previously mentioned, this will make it much easier for first time teachers to create lessons that they know will be effective in teaching students what they need to know.
- A paragraph about artificial intelligence in education. As you first explore this topic, what are your initial thoughts about using AI in a K-12 setting?
- When it comes to using artificial intelligence in education, I believe that K-12 students are too young to reliably believe that they will all use it in a way that is beneficial to their education rather than in a way that will minimize the work they have to do. I believe artificial intelligence is very useful in many aspects, however, it should not be encouraged in classrooms because it inevitably will get abused and used in ways it was not intended. I think it is important to teach students how to navigate AI because as the technology evolves it will become more part of our everyday lives and it is important for everyone to know how to use it properly. In summary, I believe that if students are given access and freedom to use artificial intelligence, it will take away from the overall learning experience.
